The Koinobori is an interactive installation inspired by traditional carp streamers. Winner of a contest held by the Powell Street Festival Society, Bing Thom Architects and Abaton Projects, The Koinobori is designed by Melody Giang, Emily Huser, and Steven Schmidt of BCIT’s Architectural Technology 3 class, along with German exchange students Kai Kattge and Sebastian Saure. Festival attendees have the opportunity to colour or write stories on fabric scales, which will then be hung on the structure’s ribbed frame creating shade and a gathering place for festival goers. Free.

Shoheijuku Aikido Canada was established to pro-mote the art of Aikido as practiced by Morita Suganuma Sensei. Aikido is a holistic practice combining physical techniques with mental discipline. Using powerful circular movements, aikido techniques embody the principle of non-resistance wherein the defender moves in complete harmony with the attacker, bringing the conflict to a peaceful conclusion for both.

Sansho Daiko creates contemporary repertoire for the taiko, or Japanese drum. Incorporating western instruments and mask-work, the group creates a performance experience that crosses ethnic and cultural boundaries. Like the plant it was named after, Sansho seeks to be a spicy addition to the west coast taiko scene.

Hyperdroids is a multi-disciplinary collaborative group assembled specifically for the Powell Street Festival. Its members include flutist Chi-ko (Chieko Konishi), composer Mark Sato, poet Soramaru Takayama, who also provides background music on ukulele and kalimba, and YurieHoyoyon , who performs the writer poems.
フルーティストChi-koの呼びかけにより結成されたスペシャルユニット。作曲家Mark Satoはイベントミュージック、企業コマーシャルの音楽制作などを手掛けており、米ディスカバリーチャンネル等にも曲が起用された。Chi-ko (Chieko Konishi) は2012年 Victoria大学においてオライオンシリーズに招かれリサイタルにて演奏する等クラシック音楽を中心に活動。最近では様々なコラボレーションにも意欲的に取り組んでいる。朗読する詩は詩人高山宙丸作。ウクレレやカリンバの演奏（高山宙丸）をBGMに、朗読者（ゆりえほよよん）がポエムを詠むというスタイルでポエムドロイズオンリーとして主に活動中。（詩、曲ともに、主宰者である詩人高山宙丸の書き下ろし。）2014年の春と秋に２回、東京・埼玉・鎌倉・長野等で１ヶ月の凱旋ツアーを行い、新聞、Yahooニュース等にも取り上げられる。プロデューサーに作曲家Mark Satoを迎え、かつてない物語と音楽の融合が実現。景色が見える朗読が空間を包み、優しい音色があなたの五感に沁みわたる。笑いあり、涙あり。映画を超えた、エンターテーメントがここに！
The omikoshi, or portable shrine, is an essential element in festivals all over Japan. The carriers, who are believed to be possessed by a divine spirit, rock the omikoshi vig- orously; the more frenzied their efforts, the more good fortune is said to pass on to everyone. Fall Seven Times Get up Eight: The Japanese War Brides (2015 - 27 min.)
Hapa-palooza / HAPA Society is proud to co-present the latest documentary from Hafu (2013) filmmaker Megumi Nishikura as part of the Mixed Flicks screen- ing series curated by filmmaker JeffChiba Stearns. Atsuko, Emiko and Hiroko were among tens of thou- sands of Japanese women who married their former enemies after World War II. They landed in 1950s America knowing no one, speaking little English and often moving in with stunned in-laws. In brutally hon- est conversations with their daughters, they reveal the largely untold story of the Japanese war brides.

The Vancouver EishinRyuIaido Club practices the classical form of iaido known as MusoJikidenEishinRyu. This martial art dates back over 450 years and is unbroken in its trans- mission through the ages. They will demonstrate traditional forms of Eishin-RyuIaido.

Currently based in Tokyo, Miyama McQueen-Tokita is an Australian-born koto player with a versatile and ever- growing repertoire. As well as performing contemporary repertoire ranging from the early 20th century to newly commissioned pieces and traditional repertoire for the koto, Miyama also writes and arranges music for herself, and regularly collaborates with both Western and non-Western instruments. Her Powell Street Festival debut will include a solo performance at the Firehall Arts Centre on Saturday, July 30, and a collaborative performance with Chordophone on the Alexander Street Stage on Sunday, July 31st. Presented in partnership with All Nippon Airways and the Consulate of Japan.

Hapa-palooza / HAPA Society is proud to co-present Matt Hashiguchi's latest documentary as part of the Mixed Flicks screening series curated by filmmaker Jeff Chiba Stearns. “I don't want to be Japanese!” film- maker Matthew Hashiguchi recalls yelling at his father. Growing up Japanese-American in a predominantly white Irish-Catholic neighborhood in Cleveland, Ohio, Matthew wondered what made him different, why he stood out. Years later he set out to document his family's experiences of being Japanese in America before, during, and after World War II.

Shihan Akira Sato arrived in 1970 and has been teaching karate-do in Canada for 44 years. Their philosophy is to train the mind, body and spirit of the individual. Their cur- rent initiative is to work with the Japanese community to confront bullying concerns.

The Ondeko-Gumi, comprised of individuals living in Canada, Japan, and the United States, is the first group living outside of Japan to be granted permission by the Kasuga Onigumi of Sado Island to practice and demonstrate the traditional festival “Ondeko” (demon drumming and dance). Presented in traditional costume and masks, Ondeko is performed for ritual purification and as a prayer for good health and an abundant harvest.

Roku Shichi Taiko are a new youth taiko group, dedicated to sharing Japanese culture through taiko drumming. Their Powell Street Festival debut features a collaboration with the dynamic Japanese calligraghy artist, Kisyuu. This exciting performance will feature the power of taiko drums with the beauty and grace of brush and ink.

Chordophone was formed by Marcus and James Takizawa as a way to integrate their classical music training with electronic music production and recording methods. Their music is a genuine and authentic expression of the modern musician with influences that include Squarepusher, Bach, Boards of Canada, and Steve Reich. For their Powell Street Festival debut, they’ll be joined by guitarist Adrian Verdejo and Tokyo-based koto player Miyama McQueen-Tokita.

Vancouver Okinawa Taiko (formerly Yuaikai Ryukyu Taiko) is celebrating its 11th Anniversary this year. The group aims to promote and preserve the Okinawan performing art of Eisa drum-dancing in the community and building friendship through Okinawan folk art. Vancouver Okinawa Taiko performs in various multicultural festivals, charity and anni- versary functions in Metro Vancouver and the United States.

Kaya Kurz and Francis Henson are a pop/jazz duo who are both currently in the Capilano jazz studies program. They play a wide range of music, from jazz standards to songs from cartoons to Ed Sheeran. They are very excited to be playing at the Powell Street Festival this year!

Lynne Kutsukake is a Toronto-based author. Her short fiction has appeared in The Dalhousie Review, Grain, The Windsor Review, Ricepaper, and Prairie Fire. She will give a special reading of her first novel, The Translation of Love at the Firehall Arts Centre on Sunday afternoon.

With mentorship from the Vancouver Sumo Fun Club, PSF hosts a Sumo Tournament for festival visitors. Do you have what it takes to be the Yokozuna (Grand Champion)? Festival visitors – men and women alike – are encouraged to take part in this exciting competition. To win, you must force your opponent out of the circle! But if you get forced out – or if any of your body parts other than the soles of your feet touch the dohyo (ring) – you lose! Pre-registration required. On Sunday, sign-up near the water cart between 12 and 2 pm.

Katari Taiko has the distinction of being the first taiko drum group formed in Canada and has developed an enthusiastic following. Since its inception in 1979, this group has performed throughout Canada and the US. The synergy of the group, their joy and passion appeals to audiences of all ages and transcends cultural barriers.
